Timber-Frame Pavilion: exposed Emberline Wood, inside and out

An open-air pavilion built around one idea: let the wood carry the design. The posts, beams, vaulted ceiling and gable soffits are all Emberline thermally modified wood, left in its natural thermally darkened tone.

It is a useful reference for anyone specifying exposed exterior wood. The structure is open on every side, so the wood gets sun, wind-driven rain and humidity with no walls to protect it.

The brief

The owners wanted an outdoor room with the warmth of a dark hardwood ceiling and none of the upkeep of tropical species. It had to look finished from every angle: exposed framing, visible ceiling boards and open gable ends, with no paint or cladding to hide movement or checking.

Frame

Posts and beams form a clean timber frame under a gable roof. Thermal modification removes most of the wood's capacity to take on moisture. That reduces seasonal movement at the joints and helps the frame hold its lines outdoors.

Vaulted ceiling

The ceiling is tongue-and-groove boards run the length of the vault. The thermal process darkens the wood all the way through, so the ceiling has a consistent deep brown with the grain still visible. The color comes from heat, not stain, so cut ends and later sanding match the face.

Gable soffits

At the gable ends, the same boards turn out to the eaves as open soffits. This is the most exposed part of the structure, where rain and sun reach the wood directly.

Lighting and details

Recessed fixtures are set flush into the ceiling boards. Stable boards keep the cut-outs tight over time.
